Notes on this list

The clubs of Rhein-Main come in two shapes. Some are chess clubs and nothing else, such as Schachfreunde Frankfurt 1921, SC Frankfurt-West in Zeilsheim, SK Bad Homburg 1927 or the Wiesbadener Schachverein 1885; others are the chess department of a gymnastics or sports club, as at Frankfurter TV 1860, TG Bornheim, TuS Dotzheim or TSG Bretzenheim in Mainz. Their teams play in the leagues of the Hessian chess federation, the Mainz clubs in those of Rhineland-Palatinate, and a league fixture is often the freshest dated sign a club gives.

The rooms vary as much: Bürgerhäuser and civic halls, the Alter Posthof in Hattersheim, the Kellerei building in Hofheim, the Prinz-Emil-Schlösschen in Darmstadt, the former town hall of Eltville-Erbach, a bar in central Frankfurt and the playing room of the Blindenschachklub. The list is grouped by town, Frankfurt first and then every town with two clubs or more; towns with a single club follow at the end.
